HGST vs WD

I'm looking to get a new mechanical hard drive to replace the failing one in my laptop and was wondering which of the two is better. I know WD is like very well known and is recommended by almost everyone but HGST is cheaper and a subsidiary of WD so would that mean their drives just as good (in terms of reliablity etc.)?

 

What are everyone's thoughts?

HGST is essentially WD.

WD owns the HGST branding, google it you'll find out.

Along with Hitachi if I'm not mistaken.

So to simplify it a bit a HGST HDD is just a WD HDD with a HGST sticker?

Pretty much yes, could be the lower end models but you still get the WD quality.

I run 2 HGST's and feel no difference to an similar WD Blue and all of them are made around the same year.

I've experienced a lot more noise on my HGST drives. I'd say just go for the standard WD Blue. They're already cheap.
