Ethereum Wallet

I'm always the type that runs my own wallet - on windows.   Im trying to put together a *nix machine to run the wallets.  First up is Ethereum. 

 

has anyone gotten the wallet to work on *nix?   I have tried Fedora, Centos (I know..  same OS as fedora) and am on Ubuntu (where I wanna be anyway).  All have teh same issue...  I get around < 100k blocks left and it stops syncing. logs start to show connection refused.
