I’ve noticed my CPU’s (i5 6500) been at 100% for a lot of the games I’m running (bf1, pubg, ect) and I’m thinking about upgrading. The two chips that strike me the most are the i7 6700k and the i7 7700k, which should I choose? or should I choose a different one?

I would recommend getting a 8600k, 8700k, 1600, or 1700. The 8700k would be the best option for gaming.

Honestly just get the cheaper ones of those two. They perform about equal. Depending on what you want to do with your system you could even consider a unlocked Core i5.  Obviously the Coffee Lake chips would be a bit faster, but then again you'd need a new mainboard as well, so I wouldn't advice it. Also don't even consider getting a Ryzen if you allready own a Skylake system, since your i5 6500 would most likely overpower most Ryzen chips in most games.

Keep in mind IT's i5 is still only 4 thread and the games he having trouble with are multithreaded. In his case Ryzen would probably be an improvement. That said, the 6700 and 7700 will do great and won't require a new mobo.

ahhh, missed that you wanted to do a in place upgrade. ya a 6700k or 7700k would be fine, I would aim to overclock it if your board supports it. I would look for the cheapest one.
