I recently decided to build my own PC insted of buying one of the new consoles. Watching many of LinusTechTips videos really helped get into the "PC World" (being a console gamer) but also left me overwhelmed with all the possebillities.

So, I really hope you guys can help me build my first gaming PC

1. Budget & Location

around € 1,100 ($ 1,500 / £ 920) lower would be nice and the max would be € 1,200

an SSD is not included in the budget as I've got a gift card and I'll be picking one up at a local store

my location is Austria and I'm going to get my parts from www.mylemon.at (sorry the site is in german)

2. Aim

Gaming – the newest game I'm going to buy is Battlefield 4 and future games I'm keeping an eye on are Titanfall, Dragon Age: Inquisition and the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

3. Monitors

I already got an ASUS VS247H-P (1920 x 1080) and I dont't plan on moving to more monitors

4. Peripherals

already picked up everything including an OS

5. Preferences (nothing is set in stone!)

CPU: i5-4670k, i7-4770k, FX-8350

CPU Cooler: Noctua

Motherboard: ASUS

GPU: 770, R9 280x

Case: Fractal Design Define R4

PSU: Corsair RM or AX

Thanks in advance and sorry for any mistakes as english is not my native language.

Are you open to shopping from other German shops as well?

Are you planning to add another gpu for cf in the future?

shipping cost from germany to austria are quite hight from the sites I've encountered. but I'm open for suggestions.

and no, I'd rather upgrade to a single, more powerful gpu in the future than going sli/crossfire.

the 8320 is only about € 24 cheaper so why not the 8350?

I've read/heard about the AMD CPUs running quite hot. so if I actually overlock in the future (which I don't plan from the start) do you think the Noctua NH-U14s will do fine or would the Noctua NH-D14 would be a better choice?

If you are doing video gaming you can get away with using the i5-4670K. the i5 actually works better than the i7. The i7 would give you the ability to do more multitasking though. Also the Intel CPU is better at gaming than the AMD.

i5-4670: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/intel/bx80646i54670/cpu-core-i5-4670-3.html <- 187.92 + 5.90 shipping

Noctua NH-U12S Cooler: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/noctua/nh_u12s/nh-u12s.html <- 65.10 + free shipping

ASUS MAXIMUM VI Hero Motherboard: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/asus/90mb0fu0_m0eay5/maximus-vi-hero-z87-rg.html <-167.40 + 5.90 shipping

CORSAIR 16G DDR3 1600MHZ: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/corsair/cmz16gx3m2a1600c10/ram-ddr3-16gb-1600mhz-vengeance.html <- 127.89 + free shipping

XFX R9 280x: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/xfx/r9_280x_tdfd/radeon-r9-280x-1000m-dd.html <- 280.21 + free shipping

Fractal D. Define R4 w/ Black Window: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/fractal_design/fd_ca_def_r4_bl_w/fractal-d-define-r4-black.html <- 101.88 + 5.90 shipping

Corsair AX760 PSU: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/corsair/cp_9020045_eu/netzteil-760w-ax760w-80.html <- 149.01 + 5.90 shipping

Total:  €1103.01

You can probably get the ASUS R9 280X for a little bit more. Has better cooling than the XFX brand. And you could also go with the Noctua NHU14S as well. You could probably cut costs on the CPU cooler if you went cheaper like a 212 Evo and got a different motherboard. But not by much. Maybe ~100 total.

Also I tried to go with a black/red color scheme :P

EDIT: Fixed my post xD. Should be € not £.

EDIT: brob is stalking me

For just gaming, there's little point paying so much to oc the cpu.

For the mobo, go with the 990fxa-ud3: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/gigabyte/ga_990fxa_ud3/990fxa-ud3-socketam3-ht3-0.html

As for the cooler, go with the 212 Evo: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/coolermaster/rr_212e_16pk_r1/kuehler-hyper-212-evo-775.html

It's plenty for a decent oc.

Psu: http://www.mylemon.at/artikel/seasonic/ss_620gm/m12ii-620-netzteil-ss-620gm.html

Everything else looks fine.

He doesn't need the SSD, brob. He has a coupon so he is already sourcing one :P Also he probably won't be overclocking either, so no need for the K-series. Also would be good to have more than the minimum required RAM for BF4. I would increase to 16GB. Otherwise good choices all around. My only real quibble is the PSU. This system will probably last him more than 5 years so a lot could change in his system between then and now.

It might be better to get a 700/750W PSU to add for future scalability (lighting, more fans, more HDDs, possible GPU upgrade (single or crossfire, more RAM etc). At current spec he will probably draw 450-500W+.

EDIT: pcpartpicker estimates ~460W draw currently with your config. So ~160W leftover. Later on down the line he decides to add another 1TB HDD, increase the RAM, it is ~480W. If he decides to crossfire it is ~720W. Or if he swaps out the 280x for a 290/290x it becomes ~527W+/-.

Don't smite me :v

Missed that, so take 73,50 off my suggestion to bring it in under € 1.000,00.

really, could this system really last about 5 years?

I was under the impression gaming PC were out of date after 2-3 years.

sorry if I may sound stupid but I started dealing with PCs only about 2 weeks back.

there are also some things I heard from friends and collegues (witch are no PC experts) and I would like to know if they're true or just myths.

- it is better to have a gpu/mobo combo of the same brand

- nvidia is performing better with intel

also, are there any types of RAM witch are better for either AMD or Intel?

like if I buy a Intel CPU should take RAM(something) but if I chose AMD I should take RAM(something different)

If one were to follow the argument to its logical conclusion everyone should initially install a 1000W psu because who knows, one might want to SLI 3 GTX 999 someday.

There is no point in anticipating crossfire or sli unless there is a specific intention to go that way. It is an absolute and total waste of money. Spend more on the psu to get better quality, not a higher power rating.

Both are false.

Brands don't matter. Only benefit is that some people like to match brands.

Brand of ram doesn't matter. Ram is ram.

You could use an intel cpu with amd ram if you'd like. Depending on my mood, I'd either appreciate your sense of humor or suggest parts that are more 'matching'.
