Posted November 25, 2017 So I have decided to use unRAID over freeNAS because of the ability to freely add drives to my raid whenever I want. Any recommendations or any reasons to switch to FreeNAS? Is it worth the extra cost for NAS hard drives instead of regular ones? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TmjqD8 Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/864675-help-with-nas-build/ Share on other sites
 Posted November 25, 2017 If you were going with Freenas you would need more ram. I think the rule of thumb is 8GB + 1 GB per TB of storage. So for your build it would be 8 + 4*4 = 24 GB. Posted November 25, 2017 I've ran freenas with 12TB 3x4TB drives with just 8GB RAM before with no problems, I did this as a test to see how it performed and there were no problems at all, even running plex server too. I now have it running with 16GB and it's only using just above 8GB. Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.
