I am building my parents a new PC with a bunch of 3 TB drives, and I am having the HARDEST time trying to install windows 7 x64 on a GTP disk. I have done:

  1. diskpart
  2. list disk
  3. select disk <id>
  4. online disk
  5. attributes disk clear readonly
  6. clean
  7. convert gpt
  8. create partition efi size=102
  9. create partition msr size=32
  10. create partition primary
  11. format fs=ntfs label="Operating System"
  12. assign letter=C
  13. exit

But I guess I am unsure if I am actually in EFI mode or not... I am running a Z77-A from Asus, and just kind of assumed EFI is the only option because i thought new boards are UEFI only, but maybe I am wrong, and I have no idea how to get to EFI mode to work on. I am trying to install from a DVD.

Anyone know?

the easiest way i know is to use a program to make a bootable uefi usb pen drive to install win7.

i use a program called Rufus to make a usb pen to install win7 with. works every time for me :)
oh i also use Partition Wizard boot disc i have to Initialise the HDD as GPT first.
(both are 100% free)
the down side is you need a blank dvd and usb pen drive.

Ok, I am trying this, but when I try and use rufus to make the bootable usb, it doesn't let me select GPT as a partition scheme because something like my image isn't a GPT bottable image. Do I just use the standard MBR for BIOS/EUFI?

the usb need to be GPT i believe. if you MBR you can't have partition bigger than 2tb.

i just gave it a quick try on my laptop and works fine for me
(i'm using a 16GB usb pen, a Winodws 7 64bit ISO i made using ImgBurn on a windows 7 64bit laptop oh i'm also usinf Rufus 1.3.4.270)
