Hey guys, our family just moved into a new home. I've ran cat6 to the office, bedrooms, and living room. Everything is pulled back to a network cabinet that I installed in the closet of the office. All of the cat6 lines are terminated with keystones on both ends. Installed in the network cabinet is my keystone patch panel, tp-link 24 port gigabit unmanaged rack mount switch, ISP stuff, and my Amplifi router. We do have FTTH on a gigabit connection.

First issue I have is with Amplifi. Not getting anywhere close to gigabit speeds, ISP connected their router to my network and confirmed my router is a bottleneck. I contacted Amplifi, they say it's a known issue and hooked me up with their beta firmware program. I'm still not getting anywhere near gigabit speeds on their beta firmware, but had a slight improvement. Regardless, this isn't something I'm willing to piss around with long term. Looking into my crystal ball I can see beta version after beta version breaking one thing after fixing another. Pretty surprised with Amplifi being affiliated with Ubiquity that they'd push products to market that they knew were nowhere near spec.

So...I'm starting to think a "real" router is the solution to my issue, with maybe a Unifi access point. The house is only 1500sqft, I assume one AP would cover this? But here's the real problem....I know jack shit about networking. I'm pretty comfortable around tech, but networking is like speaking to me in a foreign language. I'd like to go with a managed switch and a "real" router, and have watched countless videos on network configuration...seems no matter how much I study it from a hobbyist / enthusiast perspective I'm left with as many questions as I ended with. I seriously considered a pfsense box, until watching a few setup videos. By about step 3 my eyes are crossed and I'm drooling.

Looking for advice here guys. Am I better off just buying the gear and paying someone to set it up for me? I hate to do that because I'm a hands on kinda guy, but I feel like I'm getting nowhere trying to figure it out on my own. Thanks in advance...

EDIT - Forgot to mention, I'd like to keep all of the networking equipment in the cabinet if possible.

PFSense or something for the router and a couple Ubiquity APs, or one of the Ubiquity USG models.

Depending on the AP, one can be enough but I would suggest two just to be safe and provide ample coverage across the home.
