So I was looking into cheap NAS enclosures and obviously the price is mostly defined by the CPU and RAM etc. Now, does this really matter? Everything I would do with the device is through Wlan anyway, I never transmit more than mauve 7MB/s and if the slowest read/write speeds are still 100/50MB/s, what does it matter? Why wouldn't I want the cheapest NAS that supports Raid 5? I'd imagine that would be perfect for me. The model specifically in mind was ZyXEL NAS542. Super low performance according to reviews and apparently that's why it's so "slow".

Pay 50€ more and you get yourself HP micoroserver Gen 10.

8GB ram, and decent CPU.

2x gigabit ports

4 bay HDD

You can install windows server on it and use it for other things than storage only. Like VPN and plex server.

Why? What do I use the extra power for? I also don't transcode anything because I have no reason to. I assume windows also costs money and the whole situation would be way more complicated. So why would I go that route?

Well if you don't need more power than go for cheaper option.

But I noticed that I lack both RAM and CPU power on my WDMyCloud NAS device. When I'm doing backup, it's transfering around 20MB/s at best and usage is at 100%.

But if I just copy single large file, it works fine at 100MB/s transfer speed.

That's why I would recoomend micorserver. It's just suggestion if you want to look for it, otherwise get the one you linked above :)
