I am trying to create a vpn for my friends and family and I don't want it to be running on my pc Does anybody have suggestions on hardware or software?

The specs needed to run an OpenVPN server are crazy low. You can have almost 40 clients on a single core CPU with 256mb of RAM. So a RPI 3 is not only cheaper, but surpasses the specs and uses close to nothing to power

Personally, I run my VPN servers off of my router so that might be another option if using a Raspberry Pi is a scary idea for you.

In that case go get a Synology NAS, it would be under $300 for the device and the hard drives and you can configure your own VPN servers on them also.

so you are looking at a NAS basically and not for a VPN server.

 

i would also recommend you get a prebuild synology maybe even a used one as for a storage server you dont need much power anyways.

If you then still need a VPN server the synologys have the function build in.
