I were wondering if it's worth bothering getting a better cpu for my rig, looking into long-term use, usage will be for graphics work and multi tasking quite a lot, with occasional light gaming?

System specs:

-Asus Sabertooth X79

-I7 3820

-Gtx 1070

-Cooler Master HAF X case

-GS800 corsair psu

-corsair vengeance lp 1866 ddr3 CL9

Suggestions welcome, thanks!

You should look at the 3930k. It's quite cheap nowadays and should be considerably faster.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Okay, thank you for your suggestion, is there any point in getting a older Xeon at all? Do they help with rendering and such beyond 3930k/4930k etc?

You might be able to get a 2670 for not much money . They're sandy bridge 8 cores. Problem is single thread perf sucks because they run at 2 ish ghz .

All the high core count parts ran on lga1567 back then . all the others are prohibitively expensive or slower .

Not worth it imo.

The e5-1650/1660 may also be worth considering, both are unlocked 6 cores with 3 mb Cache extra over the 3930k. If they aren‘t much more expensive (10-20€ extra may be worth it if you want to) those are an option too. There is also the 1680 v2 which is an unlocked 8 core, but its quite expensive still (not really worth it for the price)

Xeon e5649@4.4 GHz on Asus Rampage II Extreme or Gigabyte x58a-OC (whatever I feel like to set up at a time) , 6x4 GB Kingston HyperX 1600, Gainward GTX 670 Phantom, Samsung 840 Evo 240 GB, BeQuiet L8 530W

Xeons have lower clock speeds than mainstream CPUs, so i wouldn't get it if the price is ridiculous

Thank you all for the suggestions, I shall look into them all, probably not for a while, my fiancée bought me a 4930K this morning as a surprise and I guess if that's plenty of power, I should give the xeons a miss?
