Game Server Hosting (Personal)

Afternoon! 

 

I have some question about home hosting for a Gmod server all the way up to Arma 3. 

 

Gmod: 64 Slots, Maybe 10 - 50 Players 

Arma 3: 54 Mods, 64 Slots, 30 - 64+ players

 

One of the servers that I'm looking at is the Dell R710. And I know people say that you don't need a server to run a server. I would build a regular desktop with a lot of ram and space. But I find that the Dell R710 is pretty cheap now. I'm looking at one for around $200 US. And I'm looking at the Dell R610 Server too. If anyone could give me some suggestions that'd be just great!

 

Specs: Two Xeon Quad Core E5507 @2.26Ghz

            Ram: 48GB DDr3

networking guy here. Before checking the specs of the machine I asume you want to host it publicly (externally). So do you know for sure you have a static IP at your ISP? If not that could make things harder.
Also are you sure your ISP doesn't do double NAT so it would block port forwarding, and you know for sure their firewall allows for the packages needed to pass?

I have an R710 and I like it a lot. Eventually I plan to upgrade to 2 6 cores for even more vms. Actually have it currently hosting several servers. But Do keep in mind what @Levisallanon said.

Why not just use a free vpn service? It eliminates all those issues and you can easily control who can access it.

there are work arounds for sure. but most free vpn servers add latency and reliability isn't the best (from what I heard). Especially for a gaming server you want the latency to be as low as possible :).

If I'm not wrong I'm pretty sure that Arma takes advantage of a high clock speed over cores. In experience 2.2GHz wouldn't be enough.

GMod can just about run on anything.

What i'd say matters most for others is whats your connection like. Are your upload speeds good enough to actually handle the data needed.

Well, I can port forward on any PC that I have, I've been hosting Gmod servers from companies for maybe 2 years now. I just want to have a one-time payment haha.

If I may ask, where did you get yours at? And how much did it cost?

No idea. Im guessing its slightly cheaper due to it being 1u instead of 2u, It also has less dimm slots and less pcie slots

What about a Dell 1950? They're kinda old but cheap. DDr2 tho.

Too power hungry and way lower performance compared to newer stuff. 771 to 1366 is actually a huge jump in performance and power efficiency

I have R610 & R710's - the R710 is a bit quieter due to the much larger fans and larger enclosure. 

Plenty of parts, compatibility is great, do recommend.

I would recommend looking on kijiji, craigslist, ebay etc. Places like those listed will cost generally quite a bit more. Although you can get them completely configured how you want them if you go through that site.
