Today my PC started normally but some seconds later it turned off and didn't turn on again. Pressing power button does nothing and there's a red overvoltage led on the motherboard. Some weeks ago I also had some problems because my PC didn't turn on at the first attempt and fans went crazy. That seemed like a motherboard problem.

I re-attached all power cables but that didn't help. Then I did the paperclip test for the PSU which seems to work. I don't have other PC but I was able to power on HDD, Optical Drive and fan with molex connector. I tried to reset CMOS which should disable overvoltage protection but the led didn't turn off.

Should I just order new motherboard? My mobo is almost 2 years old MSI B150M Mortar and PSU is 5 months old Seasonic G-550. Rest of the specs are in the signature.

Hmm. A little power from a PSU can power up simple devices by their own. I'm not certain I'd rule out bad power supply. Borrow one and see before spending big bucks

try getting msi technical support to see if they can solve your problem because it might be a "bad motherboard" even if the warranty is gone, just try it and might they could give you a new mobo if my statement is true

I tried using multimeter and 3,3V, 5V and 12V rails were all perfect. If PSU has correct voltages and can power very old 5,25" 10k RPM HDD, Optical Drive and a fan I don't really think it's broken.  I also don't know where I could borrow another PSU. Also MSI doesn't have support in my country and the store where I bought my mobo has gone bankruptcy.

Resetting the CMOS with button wasn't enough. I removed the CMOS battery and after that my PC booted just like nothing had happened! What could have caused this? Bad battery, bios bug or broken mobo?

Can't you get like another cheap-ish PSU just to try your rig with the other PSU?

My PC works fine now after CMOS reset so PSU definitely isn't the problem. I just wonder what went wrong with CMOS when my PC didn't want to boot.
