overclock will reduce the lifetime of the card

For 1920x1080 you will definitely see very noticeable gains from overclocking.
Crysis 3 at ultra + 4X MSAA is unplayable for me on my 7970 at stock, once overclocked the game becomes playable and quite smooth.

Overclocking is very easy and safe as long as you keep the temperatures in check and ensure system stability.
The best way to check for stability after an overclock is to play a game for a few minutes or run a benchmark, hunt for artifacts, things like dots, "snow", rainbow effects and shadows popping in or out.
