CPU for AM3+

I have a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2 with an AMD Phenom II X2 555 and a GTX 750 Ti.

I'm pretty sure that my CPU is a bottleneck, I want to upgrade it but I don't know what CPU to buy for my AM3+ Socket.

And, even if had a new CPU, i need to update my BIOS to support any FX Series CPU, but i can't, Gigabyte's website just have the 32 bit version of the BIOS, any idea how I can update it without having to install a 32 bit windows?

Thanks.

The BIOS update utility will work on all versions of windows. The only thing that needs 64-bit is the drivers.

I'm not sure what your budget is but if at all possible I'd strongly recommend doing a platform upgrade to AM4 and getting a Ryzen 3 chip.

I don't think it's worth the upgrade. Your system is getting old and it'd be wiser to save a bit more and buy a whole new PC.

I edit my posts a lot.

I wanted to do that, but my budget is really low, and i live in Brazil, the PC parts market here is terrible.

I don't believe 32 bit Windows is required to flash a BIOS, just a working CPU for that BIOS.

I agree with most of the other people who replied before me, replacing your PC would be a pretty good bet. Maybe see what you can do to earn some more money and plan for an upgrade you can do around Christmas or New Year's?

You're trying to upgrade something of the first gen i5 IPC level..

I don't recommend trying to revive a very old PC with no upgrade path for $ that could've been spent buying a new PC.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I can't buy a whole new PC, where I live it's just not that easy, PC parts are ridiculously expensive. Thanks for the advice though.

This is why you should be saving some more money. Spending any money on something that old would be a waste imo.

Depends just how much he pays though, can buy alot of used FX chips for dirt cheap since Ryzen was released, might not be too bad an option to boost performance until he can afford a new platform.

OP, look for things like FX4100's and FX4300's, should be pretty cheap now and offer a nice performance gain over your current cpu.

Here's the kind of pricing i found for used FX4300:

Then I'd advise buying something like a FX 8300. Usually they can be obtained for around 100$ new or even less when buying used. It won't be able to overclock as high as someting like a FX8350, but since you use a GTX 750 Ti you should be good anyways.
