Hello everyone!

My equipment: Macbook Pro early 2015 (a1502) - i5, 128gb ssd, 8gb ram.

Im looking to upgrade the storage on my Macbook. I would like to upgrade to this ssd.. My questions is would i be able to use that ssd? Or do i have to buy a different one specifically for this macbook? if i cant because of the connection type would an adapter like this work?

Thanks in advance!

It seems like it will not work

 https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/293421/MBP+early+2015+SSD+can+upgrade+with+Samsung+950+pro

Judging by that even with the adapter it will not work as that model does not support the NVMe protocol. You need to get a msata drive like

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100011693 600095832

CPU: Intel i7-4790K @ stock for now --- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16Gb --- MOBO: Asus Maximus VII Formula --- GPU: MSI Gaming GTX 980ti --- PSU: Corsair AX860i  ---  Storage: Samsung 850 250gb(OS), 3x Western Digital Blue 3tb (one for game and programs, two for media), 3tb WD Green(somewhat backup) and a Crucial M550 120gb SSD (caching games and programs drive)  --- Case: Fractal Define R5 --- Cooler: Corsair H100i with Noctua 2000rpm, Industrial Fans --- OS: Windows 10 --- Monitor: Asus PB298q + AOC l2260SWD --- Mouse: Logitech G502 Spectrum --- Keyboard: Corsair K70 (Cherry MX Red) Red LED's --- Audio: Audio Engine A2's (yes the originals), Sennheiser HD 58x Jubilee Audio-Technica ATH-AD900x, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, Ant Lion Mod Mic V4 --- Laptop: Dell XPS 9750

Well, l think there may be an issue with screwing it down.

Is this what you have?

CPU: Intel i7-4790K @ stock for now --- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16Gb --- MOBO: Asus Maximus VII Formula --- GPU: MSI Gaming GTX 980ti --- PSU: Corsair AX860i  ---  Storage: Samsung 850 250gb(OS), 3x Western Digital Blue 3tb (one for game and programs, two for media), 3tb WD Green(somewhat backup) and a Crucial M550 120gb SSD (caching games and programs drive)  --- Case: Fractal Define R5 --- Cooler: Corsair H100i with Noctua 2000rpm, Industrial Fans --- OS: Windows 10 --- Monitor: Asus PB298q + AOC l2260SWD --- Mouse: Logitech G502 Spectrum --- Keyboard: Corsair K70 (Cherry MX Red) Red LED's --- Audio: Audio Engine A2's (yes the originals), Sennheiser HD 58x Jubilee Audio-Technica ATH-AD900x, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, Ant Lion Mod Mic V4 --- Laptop: Dell XPS 9750

Yes that looks right. Also i did manage to find this article mentioning that High Seirra now supports nvme drives.

if you read further down

As for non-Apple NVMe drives, (Samsung), to this date the tests I have done are:

  • Mac Pro late 2013 : doesn't work
  • MacBook Air early 2014 : doesn't work
  • MacBook Air early 2015 : works
  • MacBook Pro 15" early 2015 : doesn't work

So there seems to be some inconsistencies in that post. I agree with @hey_yo_ that support was only added from skylake but with apple who know.

On closer inspection, the connector the ssd uses is not msata hence the need for the adapters so without going for the official ssds, these (https://www.transcend-info.com/Products/Solution_detail.aspx?no=8) or the OWC Aura

EDIT: On further research, there are mentions of apple using a proprietary storage controller(but I cannot confirm) this would mean normal ssds will not work. I would suggest getting one of the compatible sdds listed above there are others if you search
