yes that is possible.

the system is very weak and underpowered, i would go with a lighter variant of Ubuntu. Xubuntu is a good one. it's Ubuntu, but with a much lighter desktop on it. it will put a lot less strain on your memory, cpu and graphics hardware.

you have to make a bootable usb. google this. then, after you booted it and are going to install, make sure to select the option "install Xubuntu alongside Windows". it will then give you a simple slider so you can choose how much space each os gets.

WARNING: CHOOSING "ERASE DISK AND INSTALL XUBUNTU" WILL WIPE YOUR HARDDRIVE, DO NOT DO THIS! IF YOU DON'T SEE THE OPTION TO INSTALL ALONGSIDE WINDOWS REPORT BACK HERE FIRST. THERE IS A SOLUTION FOR THAT ISSUE IF IT OCCURS.

after the install is complete, you will be prompted to select an os to boot up everytime you boot your pc. so you can choose what you want to use everytime you boot it.

also, side note, what gpu do you have? or are you using the integrated gpu?

Yes, it's possible. You'll need to go into your BIOS and disable secure boot before you can install any flavor of Ubuntu, though.

Also, you need to be careful when you create partitions for the Ubuntu install. You'll need a Root partition ( / ) and swap (typically the size of your memory, so 4GB). You'll need to resize your Windows partition using the built-in partition manager in the Ubuntu installer. Some releases will do this dual boot configuration for you, but be warned that this might not be the case for all distros.

Once everything it set up, follow the instructions to complete the installation. Upon reboot, you'll see the bootloader GRUB. It should list Windows Boot Manager (or Windows 8 if non-UEFI) and Ubuntu. From here, you should be able to boot into either.

As always, back-up all data before proceeding and make sure you have a 2nd PC to create a restore medium if needed.
