hi guys,

i got this laptop from a friend and i replaced the HDD with an old 160gb wd blue scorpio because the HDD in the laptop was slowing down the whole laptop.

when i was installing ubuntu on it it froze on a certain moment in the setup screen.

after which i force shutdown the laptop, i tried starting the pc but it just gives me black screen.

when i try to boot the hdd in my own desktop it gives me the same screen.

i tried hard formatting the hdd which doesnt help. tried deleting volumes and making them again.

the wierd thing is i can store things on it but it seem that the boot is just broken for some reason?

anyone know how to fix this?

Run Ubuntu from a USB stick, go into Preferences, then Disks, and check the SMART data and/or run a self-test. A 160GB Scorpio Blue is an old drive, and it sounds like yours may have just died.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Just sounds like you might need to redo the installation USB and re-install it to me.

I have a 640GB drive that's shot to hell. Bad sectors, failing SMART data, but I can still save to it. It's just with the understanding that anything I save to it will soon be gone.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Just sounds like it's defaulting to trying to run the HDD on boot... did you actually make another installation USB and then force boot to it to re-install?
