I know this sounds stupid, but I have an old PC laying around and I want to try making at into my first server. I want to also learn Linux Mint on it but can't figure out how to boot from the ancient BIOS. If anyone can help, message me privately and I will give you my number so you can help. Setup Currently:

Case: EVGA DG-76

Mobo: ASUS

CPU: AMD FX-8350K 3.7Ghz

RAM: 28GB HyperX Fury

HDD: PNY 120GB SSD & WD Blue 1TB

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 980Ti SC (Reference model)

PSU: EVGA SuperNova 750W G3

Heatsink: NZXT Kraken x52

 

Peripherals:

Mouse: Logitech G502

Headset: Logitech G930 Wireless

Keyboard: Logitech G810 RGB Romer-G

 

Monitors:

AOC 19"

System specs? How "old" is this system exactly?

Del will get you into the bios, however the bios in that motherboard probably doesn’t support usb on startup... find an older ps2 keyboard and give it a try.

I have a cue light I can use to show you when I’m joking, if you like.

Good grief that's old. You won't be able to run Linux Mint off a USB stick with something that ancient so you'll have to use a bootable ISO on a CD. The Mint website has a good tutorial on how to get it working, so start from there. Hell it's old enough you might actually need a bootable floppy disk before the CD drive will be recognized.

You can burn PLOP boot manager to CD and then use that to boot to USB. It doesnt always work but i have booted some old c2d machines tjat way.

 

Alternatively you can install your target HDD into a newer machine, install, and then migrate the HDD back to the server.
