Keyboard and mouse randomly stop working

Ok guys, so here's the situation:

 

Sometimes, my mouse, keyboard or both stop working. At random.

But, most of the time this happens when watching anything on VLC.

So at first I thought it was a VLC software issue...

...until it happened when I didn't have VLC open at all.

This is something I haven't faced before, so obviously that gets me thinking about what changes I've recently made to the system.

And the significant one in this case, is that I have the keyboard and the mouse now plugged into my ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q via the USB hub underneath it.
Now, there's some serious cable management going on here so I don't want to undo all that and still have the issue. So I decided to get some help from you guys with troubleshooting it.

 

Any ideas?

Try unplugging them from the USB hub and using them like that?

You pretty much answered yourself. You need to rule out the usb hub fault first. I've had a few usb hubs randomly turn off at times.
