Hi,

I'm upgrading my Haswell-based build (i3 4130, GTX 750 2GB, 8GB of RAM). I'm currently torn between upgrading to a Ryzen 5 1600 for a total cost of $350, but I just got a custom offer on eBay for a Xeon e3 1230 v3, which is basically an i7 4770, for $200, shipping included. I also found another offer at $180, shipping included too, from a seller with a lower number of user feedbacks (4000 vs 40000+). I don't live in the US so it's kind of hard to find seller shipping at a decent price. Here's a comparison between the two : http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4770-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-1600/1978vs3919

I'm upgrading this rig to be able to edit videos, so I definitely more power. However the R5 is around 20% faster but I don't realize what it translates to in every day performance. The Xeon would cost me only 60% of the price of the R5 upgrade, so I'm not sure which one would be the best investment.

What do you think?

I'd get the Xeon and maybe get more RAM as well.

RAM is a big deal too, and that's why I was wondering if it was worth investing on DDR3 memory. On the other hand, I saw that DDR5 might be coming next year, so why not get this and upgrade again in 2019...

In the long run you'd be better off upgrading to Ryzen, more room for upgrades in the future as the socket will be supported until 2020.
The extra cores will come in handy as more games start to utilize more than 4, and if you ever decide to stream or do workloads.

Means spending a bit more on new DDR4 ram, but DDR3 ram can still be sold for quite decent prices to get a bit of your money back.

That was exactly the reasons that would make go for Ryzen. If I sell my i3, RAM, motherboard and aftermarket cooler, I should get $100 - $200 back. Decisions, decisions.

I think I'll go for the Xeon though. That's $140 difference in price and "only" a 20% difference in performance. $140 is quite a lot of money when you're on a budget, and that's the kind of money that would get me a much better phone! (I need to upgrade my Moto G3). I could still upgrade again in around 18 months or so.
