What disc drive should I get?

I'm looking into maybe building my own gaming PC & I'm stuck on what type of disc drive to get.

What should I get Blu-ray or DVD?

Do you even need a disc drive or use discs?

If you're having to ask which to get, it sounds like you don't use them, so no point getting one really. Most cases don't come with 5.25" bays anymore either.

I do like having physical copies, but if cases these days don't have dvd bays I guess I won't bother.

You can still find some that do, but the majority of "gaming" cases, like tempered glass and windowed ones, don't include bays for them :P

The thing is, they're rarely sold anymore. Physical copies are generally just unhandy.

Asus makes a nice external slim drive. If anything, I would just grab one of those if you NEED a drive. I have an older LightScribe external drive that I hung onto just incase I ever need it. I think I've used it once in the past 3 years to make a DVD for my daughter. lol

This is an option, although I personally went with an LG WH14NS40 sata bluray drive, which is $40 on Amazon.  This drive was highly recommended for ripping digital backups of your physical media https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007VPGL5U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I put the drive in a Vantec external USB3.0 enclosure:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRUN0HQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This setup works extremely well for ripping mkv's of your DVD and bluray collection.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.
