My SSD is full, And I want a fresh start, I want a change from windows 10. An old laptop of mine had windows vista and Im not going to lie, I really like it and want to try it on my system, But is security and compatibility still ok? Are my games going to actually run properly? I know it doesnt support DX12, Thats fine.

Thanks.

Windows Vista has not been supported since April and it no longer receives security patches.

If you encounter vulnerabilities then you will have to upgrade to a newer Windows version to remain supported/protected.

Windows Vista is officially end of support, just like Windows xp. it's insecure, and doesn't get support and compatibility with the latest security updates from Microsoft. the latest OS you can run that has support is Windows 7.

Vista's security updates ended in April this year, so no, it's not okay from a security perspective.

As for compatibility, I'm not sure. You're likely to see more and more programs not work with it as Windows 10 takes over.

Thats a shame, Could I make 7 look like vista at all?

yes you can. put a vista wallpaper on there, and set the taskbar to "use small icons". done.

Vista was not good for gaming, or anything really. And yes, you can make Windows 7 look like Vista. You can use UXThemePatcher and download a Vista theme for Windows 7.

As everyone has pointed out, Vista is out of support, and I know from experience that there are fewer programs that support it. Chrome doesn’t even support it. Drivers for a modern system wouldn’t even exist for such an old OS.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

take windows 7 instead. it's almost like vista, but better.

they did a lot of things right with 7 where they previously screwed up on vista. and 7 is still supported while vista is dead and burried.

or try windows 8.1 and install classic shell to get a proper start menu.
