Because the number is measured by the horizontal length, in pixels. 4 4k screens in a square would result in a horizontal length of 8k. 3 4k screens arranged horizontally makes it 12k.

The number refers to approximately how many pixels there per line.

 

So I guess technically if we make a 8,294,400 x 1 screen, we can say it's an 8.3M screen. :D
