Or maybe the CPU is not compatible with the motherboard?

If it doesn't boot you cannot update the BIOS.

A good starting place would be to see if it even lists support for the chip you swapped into it in the first place. And if it does, then go ahead and throw the old chip back in so you can actually update the BIOS.
