Leaving Micro USB Cable Plugged In

i use a micro usb cable for my phone and xbox controller but always unplug it. i was told by some teacher 10 years ago that leaving cables plugged in when not connected to a device would burn them out. i have no idea but ive always unplugged them when not using them.

would it be fine to leave my micro usb cable plugged into my pc even if its not powering anything?

If there is no power from the system and USB port then no power will be used. There may be a slight phantom load if you measure it with a watt meter from the wall since most devices when off are in a standby mode but nothing that would degrade your controller and such.
