so i was looking to back up my iphone 6 on my computer recently and was trying to free up space on my ssd, i look in my users file and there is a file called "NTUSER.DAT" that is almost 70gb! i looked into it and found out its the registry saver or whatever you call it, and was told not to delete it. But ive heard that there are ways to shrink it down? do not know any methods and really want to free up some space on my ssd thats being used up almost all of it (256gb) just on the one file. Any ideas on how to shrink it?

Who told you that there are ways to shrink it and then didn't explain what they are?  That's just... terrible xD

I can only think of one (turn on compression under "Advanced", as seen below), but I don't think that will actually work since the file is "locked".

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Delete it anyway:

Probably not a good idea.  It contains the registry information for your specific user so there would be a lot of problems if it was removed.

I agree with gabrielcarvfer. The registry can store binary data, like an image. The idea for such support was back with Windows 95 and 98 days for programs able to fetch information faster than on disk. It was rarely used as HDDs got faster, RAM was limited and expensive, and harder to work with. Basically, it was designed for special cases, and not the norm. But it looks like that you have installed a program that miss use this feature and put actual large images and other data files in it... OR a bug in a program 'cause a massive write of data on in the registry.

NTUSER.DAT should be around 5-6MB... for most people. The size depends on the number of programs installed on the system for the user and what programs.

Basically, NTUSER.DAT is: HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry section.
