M.2 vs ssd

Is it worth getting an m.2 storage device over an SSD if my budget can afford it? I have all the parts picked out but have about $8 left that I could use.

I think you mean PCIe M.2 vs SATA SSD. If your motherboard only supports SATA M.2 SSDs then it will not be any faster than a typical 2.5" SATA SSD.

Msi b350 gaming pro. I haven't found anything so far that says it doesn't support it.

You should be good to use a NVMe m.2. If you can afford that it would offer a decent boost.

If the rig is for gaming I don't actually know how much it would help out. You'd need to ask someone who's read/seen the benchmarks.

Assuming we're talking about an nvme and not sata m.2 it's one of those "nice to have" things but in reality you won't really see much of a real world difference between it and a good sata ssd for gaming or normal desktop tasks. It's kind of an elegance thing, like to be able to say you have one. It's like an AIO vs High-end air cooler.. you probably won't notice a huge difference, but it looks good on paper and it's nice to have.
