I am putting a build together for my brother. He will be buying my STRIX 960.

He really wants to keep that case. He also really wants an SSD. Looks are important here, that is the reason for the CPU cooler.

I'm trying to decide between the Pentium and a Ryzen 1200. Don't know yet.

Thanks for any help.

Note: This is already over budget so please, if anything make it cheaper not more expensive.

I'd probably go for a Ryzen 3 1200, or save up money for a Core i5

Saving up is pretty much out of the question. He's getting a PC on November 12th, custom or not.

Also note, there is no plan on overclocking. Ever.

I'm still looking at the Ryzen though.

The Pentium will provide better a experience in gaming. How ever if your brother wants to use it for gaming and other things like video editing than go with RYZEN.

If you don't mind my asking, why is that? This is the only benchmark I've found that's close to my situation. https://www.techspot.com/review/1463-ryzen-3-gaming/

It shows, with a card like a 960, that they perform the same. And the Ryzen costs $40+- more.

What? It's over budget and has no GPU. Including mine for $100 would put it at almost $900. Unless I'm missing something.

Also, this is just for gaming.

Thanks.

It's his Birthday. He already needs it for school so it's not like he could wait another month either way.

Looks very good. Except he really wants a Micro ITX. He only has a small place to put it and loves the Enthoo Evolv TG.

The Ryzen 1200 comes with the Wraith Stealth cooler. So you can take yours off the list. Based on adding the Pentium and your cooler, the Ryzen is only $10 +-  more than what you have now. Also, let's face it, we all say our PC is just going to be for gaming but in reality we end up using it for other things and that is where the Ryzen will come out ahead.

Yes, and the reason for the cooler is for looks. The wraith stealth looks alright although I wouldn't surprised if he still wants something with some red.

As for "other things", I've had my PC for 2 years and haven't really done anything that a Pentium couldn't handle. Although I guess it is possible.
