best 1st gen core cpu

I have a pc with a core i3 540 2 gigs of ddr3 ram at 1333mhz (i will buy a kit of 2 sticks of 4gb at 1333mhz) and a biostar h55 hd mobo, my question is: wich 1st gen core cpu would be the best for me?
i am not planning on overclocking it, because the motherboard isnt able to overclock, and the primary purpose of the pc will be to play video games and do some video editing

also, which gpu would work better with the recommended processor?

The Xeon is a tad faster and alot cheaper if your chipset supports it

An i7-880 (I think?) is the best you can get on that board. The X58 i7's were magnificent, but they need different motherboards than what the -800 series took.

As for a GPU, I had a GTX 260 paired with my i7-920 for a long time, and the CPU was always a wee bit ahead. I think something like a GTX 750 Ti, GTX 1050 or RX 560 would be ideal.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

While those are the fastest, I wouldn't recommend going above an x3460 for 35$... Its double the price for a couple percent difference in total performance, which can be caught back with some light overclocking...

Xeon e5649@4.4 GHz on Asus Rampage II Extreme or Gigabyte x58a-OC (whatever I feel like to set up at a time) , 6x4 GB Kingston HyperX 1600, Gainward GTX 670 Phantom, Samsung 840 Evo 240 GB, BeQuiet L8 530W
