Hi Guys

My girlfriends laptop, an Asus r558U is extremely loud because of the fans going bat s**t crazy for absolutely no reason, atleast from what I can see. They start to spin at what i assume is full speed and it's very loud, even when she's just watching youtube and doing very very basic non-demanding things. Ive been monitoring CPU temps via Real Temp and the temps around 35 degrees which should be more than just fine. In task manager Ive tested CPU usage and memory usage with only a web browser open which is usually what she has running. With 3 youtube windows opened playing a random youtube video the CPU usage is at 14% and memory 45%. Is this a matter of a defect fan or something?

I really dont understand why the fans are going so crazy all the time. Any tips / help / advice would be MUCH appreciated!

Try this, prop up the laptop with a book or something, ensuring the intake for the fan (and exhaust) are clear, and see if that makes any difference.

If it doesn't, post a screen shot (when the fans are at their worst) of the full list of things running in the Task Manager, lets see what we can find

So I've taken several screen shots of the task manager now (6 pieces) not sure if i could have done it in a smarter way :P But fans were spinning like crazy at the point of taking these screenshots. And all intakes for the fans are clear I've had it open several times to check. And thanks alot for taking the time to help me :D

And sry for the language being in danish ...

I grew up in Denmark, ah the memories...

I'm not seeing anything that immediately jumps out as being an issue, but I do notice you have a lot of things running.

Let me ask a few more (potentially dumb) questions:

(1) You've checked for viruses and malware?

(2) If you boot the laptop up from cold, and log into Windows 10, do nothing at all, just let it sit idle, how long before the fans start spinning?

(3) Is your set up of Win10 at the default (i.e. with all the Telemetry enabled) or have you turned all that stuff off?

I just ran a virus program showing it had 1 minor virus and 2 serious one, being called something like "trojan.win32."

After doing this we restarted the laptop and the fans slowly ramp up to medium speed i would say - this takes 1-2 minutes. And we are doing nothing on the laptop during this, only sitting on the desktop, doing nothing.

As soon as we open the google chrome and start browsing facebook/youtube/news etc. the fans go nuts again.

regarding the setup of Win10 we have changed nothing so i suppose everything is at default - the laptop came with the operating system installed when we opened it out of the box.

when you say you cleaned it, did you cleaned the heatsink?

Waw, that looks insane! I haven't taken the entire fan and heatsink off as he does in the video, but I have cleaned it with compressed air. But if this was the issue - wouldn't i experience high temps? Right now the laptop is running at 30c

If it's chrome misbehaving, look at the extensions installed. Ensure there is nothing there that shouldn't be.
Look up OOShutup10, and to a lesser extent (mainly because it's not for a novice) Win10Privacy.
Both these programs neuter win10, and it might help as well.
Any settings applied with those two programs can be undone, in case you need some of the functionality it shuts down.
Try, possibly, creating a new profile and running that for a bit, see what happens.

Try something like HWMonitor or SpeedFan and see if it will tell you what the fan speed is.  I've seen some instances where if the bios is unable to read the fan speed, it will set it to the max rpm as a safety feature.  So if you don't get a fan speed, or if it looks wrong, you might need a new fan.
