Hi! I need some recommendations with my build plan before 2017 ends.

First off, please check out PCPP URL for my current rig.

You can also see my current rig on my sig.

My plan is to downsize and buy a GPU.

Unfortunately, I have some concerns with regards to cooling so I would like to take some time to plan it all out.

1. Budget & Location

I have around 25,000 Pesos (around 500$) budget. This includes the new case (around 100$) the new GPU (around 350$) and a CPU Cooler, as needed (50$)

I also plan on adding another 8GB stick of RAM but that is not included in the budget.

2. Aim

Mainly gaming and torrents. I generally don't play AAA games but it would be at least fun to have a rig ready to play them.

Most-played games:

- League of Legends

- Overwatch

My other games are very old (e.g. Prince of Persia series, Assassin's Creed series)

3. Monitors

I currently have a 27" 1080p LG IPS Monitor (AMD FreeSync capable) and a separate 20" AOC M2060SWD.

Both are, iirc, 75Hz max. But playing 60Hz is fine by me.

Obviously when playing, I'll only be using the 27" (maybe 20" for stats/notes/whatever)

4. Peripherals

None. All good with peripherals.

5. Why are you upgrading?

If not already obvious, I do not have a graphics card YET ahahaha

I will be changing my case to a Silverstone ML08 for added portability

-----------

  • Should I go for an open-air GPU? I've found a forum post from a Silverstone rep that they generally recommend open-air over blower-type even for this small a case. However, if I get an open-air GPU, do you think it will have a significant effect on temps on the MoBo-side of the case? I'm not entirely sure how separated the 2 chambers are.
  • CPU Cooler recommendations? I've not yet done my research on <58mm  CPU Coolers so it'd be cool if you can recommend some (so I can reduce my options).
  • CPU Cooler fan orientation? After some reading, IIRC, pulling air from the MoBo is better than pushing air to the MoBo as it avoids recycling of hot air and will also try to cool the MoBo parts while pulling cool air from the inside of the case. However, (1) this will probably create negative pressure, (2) If I use an open-air GPU, the air around the case may already be hot (cool air from outside > GPU > Motherboard > CPU Cooler > outside of the case
  • GTX 1060 vs RX 580? Seeing as I have AMD FreeSync ready, I'm leaning towards the RX 580. If priced similarly, is it correct to assume that the RX 580 8GB will be better (for my case) than a GTX 1060 6GB?

Thoughts?

Karamo

I would get blower cards. This case only has 1 120mm/140mm fan mount on the front (not visible in pictures but stated in spec section) and the rest of the vents do not have fan mounts (unless you drill holes and hold case fans in place). I do not expect this to give enough cooling for a $500 graphics card (which could be a GTX 1070 or even 1070ti, if the rumoured prices are correct.

sorry i updated the budget. I only have around 350$ for the gpu. so that's just a 1060 / 580.

Then open cooler or blower for 1060, blower cooler for 580.

In the case for 1060, using open cooler will make the GPU cooler, but other parts hotter.  580 is too hot for open cooler in a case with airflow this limited.
