Budget CPU/Motherboard combo?

I'm looking for a cheap CPU/motherboard combo. I'd like to avoid upgrading memory if possible, so I was looking into older CPU generations from Intel such as Ivy Bridge or Haswell since those both use DDR3 memory which is what I have. I could upgrade to Skylake, but DDR4 memory is still a bit pricey so I'd like to avoid using that if I can.

I was looking at the i7-4770K, 3770K, 6700K, or i5-4670K, 4690K, or maybe even go as low as an i3-6100/6300(even though dual core gaming is going out of style, but I don't play games that are too CPU demanding atm so it doesn't really matter to me). I'd like to avoid buying used if possible. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions or think my ideas are too far fetched?

Won't DDR3 memory still work with Skylake?

It will, but some people have been saying to not use it.

Got it.

The 6700k is very much still a capable CPU, so my vote is on that.

You could look for a used X58 Xeon CPU and Mobo.

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

I'd like to avoid used if possible, and I want to overclock which I can't do on a Xeon. Thanks for the suggestion though

The Xeons are overclockable. 4ghz is easy to hit, with some people getting into the 5ghz range on more exotic cooling.

I thought they were locked...

Weird. Maybe it depends on model?

The X58 gen could be overlooked if you had a non server motherboard (iirc even some server motherboards could OC).

Intriguing. I might consider that...

Although used electronics can sometimes be a little sketchy

Used parts are mostly ok. @Zando Bob knows more about old Xeons then me, so direct questions to him :P
