so I have an MSI Gaming 970 Gaming AM3+/AM3  motherboard and was planning to get a Samsung Evo or Pro 960 but my board doesn't support m.2 nvme so I want to know if  was to get a Lycom DT-120 M.2 PCIe to PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter, would the m.2 work on my board

The loading performance difference of NVMe vs. SATA is negligible most of the time except in very specific use cases that most people don't ever do. In-app performance also doesn't improve.

You wont see any performance improvements in terms of the speed of the drives when it comes to loading times, neither with ryzen. NVMe SSDs have good performance in terms of read and write speeds when transfering large amounts of data, normal sata SSDs dont do well in this segment, but when it comes to loading/boot times, they are generally fast when it comes to this partpicular segment.
