Issue with CoD4

I bought Call of duty 4 yesterday and tried to play. I get an error message saying "failed to initialise punk buster, punk buster is disabled"

The issue is you're playing COD4

 

Punkbuster is an old anti-cheat system, not sure if it still works anymore on modern hardware.

Seriously? wasted £10 on a game that I can't even play. ffs.

I did.. Installed it and I can't add the game..

I still play Cod4 from time to time. First of all disable Punkbuster in Options. It doesn't work for years. Secondly play on custom servers, which you can find on Gametracker.com or similar. There's a pretty solid playerbase and you won't find any kids or annoying russians (mostly). To connect to a server press ~, then type /connect (Copy/paste Server IP)

I bought it on Friday, and played it on weekend without any issues.

 

When running 1st time, it was stuck while installing punkbuster or doing something about punkbuster. I closed the message, started game again, and it worked for me.

COD4 these days only has either cheaters and hardcore veterans playing online, campaign is only good thing bout that game.
