My friend has this odd problem on Skype where when we are in a call and he launches a game, his microphone lets out this annoying background-noise-type moan which is quite annoying for me to listen to. The problem began occurring when he got his new PC which I built for him, so I am pretty confident it is not a hardware problem, and it only happens when he starts up a game.

He has all the latest drivers installed, so I don't know what the problem could me. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated :)

It's probably whine from the on board soundcard, caused by interference when the CPU and/or GPU and/or RAM load data when he starts a game. Try moving the jacks the mic is plugged into to spare ones (generally front panel audio jacks have issues, versus rear panel jacks). It could possibly be poor internet connection - that Skype compresses the audio signal when enough bandwidth isn't available (such as when playing a multiplayer game and hosting a Skype call), so try changing who hosts the call, or starting the call after starting the game. Also, having external HDDs plugged in to USB ports can give you terrible whine and popping/clicking in your audio.
