Hey guys, so I'm going to be headed to university soon and I'm planning to pick up a laptop/tablet within the next couple of weeks. Right now I'm leaning towards the Surface machines (Surface book/Surface Pro) because of their portability and battery life but I'm a bit hesitant because they don't have thunderbolt in case I get an eGPU or something along those lines. Any suggestions?

I would highly recommend avoiding the Surface products (especially the SP) if you do not intend to HEAVILY use the pen. As a laptop, the SP is atrocious compared to a real laptop, and the SB is much better, but still not as good as a real laptop (and very expensive).

Do you have any other suggestions I should look into?

Avoid using dGPU with thunderbolt, cause GPU bottleneck

Get something with 8th gen U CPU and an entry level GPU, for instance Acer Swift 3 with 8250U and MX150, you get portability and battery life too.

Also as mentioned above, the surface book is a waste if you don't use much pen. Personally I'll avoid them due to throttling in heavy loads which I don't like.
