USB keyboard suddenly not working

genexis_x

My external USB keyboard suddenly doesn't work with my laptop. When it's connected, the backlight LED light up but I can't type anything. (my external mouse works fine)

Things I tried:
-unplug laptop from charger
-restart (a few dozen times)

-plug into different ports
-unchecking 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' in power management tab in 'USB Root Hub' (in device manager)

-run Windows USB troubleshooter
-update, reinstall drivers (keyboard, trackpad, generic USB hub, chipset) in device manager
-uninstall hidden devices in USB controller in device manager

-uninstall all USB devices in USB controller in device manager

The most confusing thing is, the device didn't show up in connected devices, however I can't find any unknown device in device manager.
Also, one weird thing I had noticed is when I run the Windows USB troubleshooter, it says 'The USB controller is in a failed state or is not currently installed'.

Edit: Didn't work in BIOS either.

I've spent a few days trying to fix this but the USB keyboard still didn't work. Any help is much appreciated!

plug in another machine

works? good. needs to be investigated.

doesn't? throw away get a new one :-)

chances are that power still is transfered to the back light stuff but the controller actually controlling the input went dead. result would be no input but a functioning back light....

But I had this problem last week and weirdly, I fixed it by unplugging my mouse...
