Hi! This rig will be my first build in over 10 years since I've been using Apple this past years, so I'm really not up to date with any of the stuff out there... What should I buy? I mean, I want to get the best value for my money, and I know that there's things like "go for the 1700 and not the 1700x since the price tag is bigger than the actual benefits" that I don't know. Here's what I want:

32GB RAM (@ the speed you advice!)

6/8 cores @ 4GHz I think should suffice

128GB SSD

1TB HDD @ 7k

GPU ...? I will use 2 displays, 23" each that have a 60Hz refresh rate, and I don't need more than a 1440p resolution. What do you recommend?

This will be just a working station to run Ubuntu or some Linux distro like that (I haven't decided yet), not for gaming nor designing of any kind, just 1 or 2 active VMs, 100 Chrome tabs, Spotify playing on the back, several SSH connections, VPN app, text editors, and things like that.

I know nothing about motherboards, cooling, power, and so forth, and very little about GPUs. I want it to be as quiet as possible, and I'd prefer not to get into liquid cooling, but any suggestions about this is much appreciated!

Thanks and sorry for the noob overload!

EDIT: I don't want to spend more than 1600 USD.

Hope it's not totally out of your budget, Ryzen does really well at multitasking and with fast memory. I added the Corsair H55 as a cheap liquid cooling solution that does really good job at keeping a CPU cool and staying quiet(most of the time I can barely hear mine).

If you were to overclock the CPU and/or RAM, I'd go for the 1700 with DDR4-2400 or 2666MHz, since Ryzen scales quite well with faster RAM.

I don't think you'll need that beefy of a video card for this kind a of a use case. I'm not really all to familiar with GPU utilization by VMs. Maybe a 1050Ti to save a little money...?

Yes, no more than that should be enough!

Great processor (R7 1700), best CPU cooler you can get w/o custom loop, GTX 1070 is more than adequate for a long time. You might wanna consider switching to all solid-state storage. I think it could fit in your budget, especially if you switch out the 1070 for something cheaper.

Hey guys! Thanks to all of you for helping me. I've already checked all the recommendations you gave me. This are my choices so far, the best I can make while shopping in ARG, trying to reach the highest quality/value ratio:

Ryzen 7 1700

Stock cooler

Asus GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GDDR5 Rog Strix

DDR4 Corsair Vengeance Led 32gb (2x16GB) @ 3200 Mhz

Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K5

250GB Western Digital Blue M.2 SSD
1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue HDD

Evga 650W GQ 80 Plus Gold

Again, thank you for your help!
