So, I'm experiencing one of the nightmares of PC building, and that is, once I've completed my build, nothing turns on. I've followed everything step-by-step as I have seen in videos, but I believe I'm failing to do something, as this is my first build ever. I originally bought a gigabyte Z270XP-SLI motherboard off amazon to house my components, which consist of the following pieces:

One note to make, I have not purchased the GPU yet, and therefore have not had one connected, my friend says this may be the issue, but he possesses about the same amount of PC knowledge as I do, so I want to know what you may think. Now as I said, I completed everything for the build, and nothing powered on when I pressed the power button on my PC, and yes I consulted the manual and made sure I plugged everything in right. I still could not find out why this was happening. I read to do the 'Paperclip Test' with the power supply, to make sure the PSU itself wasn't the issue, and it worked perfectly, my case lights, case fans, and the PSU fan all turned on, but when I put the connector back on the motherboard and tried again, nothing. I eventually returned the MB, as it had a hefty amount of reviews from people claiming they received a DOA board, I returned mine in hope that this was the only issue. Fearing receiving a DOA board, I looked to a different brand that had no reviews with DOA claims, and purchased an MSI Z270 Tomahawk motherboard. I did my build again, doing everything but attaching my cooler master heatsink/fan just to see if it worked, screwed it in, plugged everything in that needed to be plugged in, and again nothing, not even anything on the screen. At this point, I believed maybe the power switch on my case is bad, as I've honestly never heard of this case brand before, and I look up how to test this, and I find out about the screwdriver test for motherboards, using a screwdriver to short the power switch pins and fire up the motherboard without the use of a power button, I tried this and again nothing, not even doing this can cause my motherboard to power up. I've looked it over inside and out, and can't find any reason why this is failing. I find it hard to believe that I could have received two dead motherboards from two different brands back to back, so I'm convinced it's user error, but am stumped as to what I'm doing wrong, so, I'd like to consult the knowledgeable members of this community for assistance.

tl;dr - I'm on my second MB where the MB doesn't receive power or start up even using the screwdriver method to short the power switch pins, PSU is good, need advice.

Hi, your problem could stem from DOA board, power connectors not seated in properly or one of the components causing a short somewhere on your board, the best advice is to build your system outside of your case to check that everything works and powers up.

build it up on motherboard box and see if it powers up, if it does and it fails to work when installed into your case it could mean the case is the culprit and causing a short of some form. at this moment in time it could be one or several things that are stopping you from powering on. the only thing to do is to go round and check everything make sure cables are seated properly same with ram and cpu and just slowly check things off a list.

im sorry i cant be much more help here but hopefully you get up and running soon!

If it has been shorted out by something, such as the case, does that mean my components may have been damaged? I disassembled it and redid it outside the case on the box, but nothing, I checked the CPU and moved the ram to each different slot to try that, still no progress.
