problems with oc gtx 1060

Go to solution Solved by Cyberspirit,

@xtrax Hi do you have your Core Voltage Power Limit and Temp Limit maxed out?

Also could you please send a screenshot of your MSI Afterburner Properties?

Here's some screenshots of my Afterburner:

Ps.: Don't use the Apply overclocking at system startup unless you think you got a stable overclock.

I'm trying to oc my gtx 1060 and I'm running into trouble with actually applying the overclock in msi afterburner (I think). I used valley benchmark for my stock speeds, then I added increments of 25 (to the core clock speed), and ran valley benchmark each time I added increments of 25 (on the slider), until I got to 150. I compared each result from valley benchmark to my stock speeds, and the fps was pretty much the same. After each benchmark, I noticed that the top core speed was pretty much the same, although I was increasing it. After I make a change to the core clock speed, i always apply it, save it to the profile, than I go back to the profile and apply it, so I'm pretty sure I'm saving the profiles. I'm pretty sure that the temp is not a problem, because I manage to stay in the low 70's.

Could it be that the overclock is lower than what GPU boost 3.0 does for you?

gpu boost 3.0 already cranks up the frequency a lot. try adding some voltage, you will see the frequency go even higher

@Cyberspirit thanks, mine is pretty much the same. My temp and power limit are set to the highest. Also, do you think it's a good idea that I max the core voltage out because apparently I read somewhere that maxing isn't too good for the gpu? Maybe I should try the evga tuner if this doesn't work out.

@xtrax There's your problem. You didn't move the voltage slider at all that's why it doesn't actually overclock.

Also yeah you can max it out because your video card will only use as much voltage as it needs.

If you don't feel safe having it maxed out you can tone it down and see how low can you get but first max it out alongside with the power limit and the temp limit.

Also see that little tab next to the Power limit? Click that and make sure the Power limit and Temp limit are linked.

@xtrax If you don't have Gpu-z yet i'd strongly suggest getting it because if you go into sensors there's a little thing called PerfCapReason

which tells you whats holding back your GPU.

At the moment mine says Util which means i'm the one holding it back since i'm not gaming.

you can max out the voltage on your card, cards from the 10-series are very conservative with the voltage overclock, so maxing it out on your card won't hurt a single bit

@xtrax If you need further help hit us up anytime :)

Also don't forget to test Overclock stability in multiple games and benchmarking software.

Just because it can run let's say Valley no problem it can still crash after playing a game for a minute or hours.

I had this problem with Overwatch it crashed randomly sometimes an hour in and with Witcher 3 crashing after a couple minutes.
