Alienware X51 modifications.

So, my cousin has an Alienware X51 with the following specs:

 

Intel Core i7 3770

8GB DDR3

256GB Samsung 840

Nvidia GT 640 1GB

230W external PSU

 

And he wants me to do some upgrades. Specifically, GPU and maybe HDD. It's a cramped case, and while I have seen people put GTX 660s in it, I want to know what 760 will fit. Note that I will not go for a GTX 670 Direct CU Mini. Nice card and all, but it would mean a more expensive card and having to buy used. Also, will there be PCI-E 6-pin and 8-pin power connectors in there? Also, what is a good new PSU for it?

I dont know if you can upgrade the PSU, since the PSU is a power brick...

I believe there is a 760 version of the X51 so it should fit I have also seen people use 670's and unless external a normal PSU won't fit I would recommend gutting it and getting a new case if you want to do upgrades like a new psu

I think the power brick for the X51 is 300W by default.

It pulls 170W, same as a GTX 670.

Then it should work. The 300W PSU is enough for my GTX 660 and 3770.

the 760 has a tdp of 170w and the 3770 77w so yeah... I wouldn't buy the 330w either

A new case is the best solution imo.

Pretty much all of the slim mATX cases out there are crap and support only half height PCI-e cards.

25cm max i believe, ive seen people fit 670s in there but no higher

Thanks man. I could get an 8 pin to 6 pin adapter, so it's not the end of the world.
