i have a i5 4690k at 3.5ghz with a asetek 550lc liquid cooler bought on sale couple years ago i notice that my temperature of my cpu was reaching 80 degrees celsuis while gaming i googled to see if that was bad temps at just stock but all i could see was people with the same i5 overclocked to 4.0ghz-4.4ghz and reaching those temps while gaming with a hyper 212 evo and other coolers. Do i need to a new cpu cooler or more fans in my case and if so i only have a budget of 50 usd.

I would start with a good old cleanup by removing the heatsink of your CPU, reaply thermal paste, clean up dust from rad / filters / fans etc. and see if that improves things.

(also don't trust the internet, there are tons of people who overclock the hell out of everything and actually never did so once...)

Ok if i do that and the temps still hit that high what would you suggest?

o.O what?

Thermal paste only works when it is wet, once it dries it is like trying to cool a cpu with a piece of paper between that and the cooler.

Your cooler probably needs a good cleaning as well.

Also, don't buy a 212 evo, it is bad value.

Basically, that piece of metal on your cpu? That's just a heatspreader.

The actual part that contains transistors is much, much smaller. When you remove that piece of metal, you get something that looks like this.

pic_disp.php?id=29847&width=400

The metal thing on the right with a bunch of thermal paste is the part that actually has transistors. The thing on the left is the piece of metal you actually see on top of the CPU. It's called the IHS (internal heat spreader)

There's thermal paste between the die (physical part with actual transistors) and the IHS. That thermal paste can degrade over time, which results in worse thermal performance.
