Performance Expectation with 6600k 4.6ghz and 1080 FTW

SickBangerzM9

As in the title I OC'd my 6600k to 4.6ghz and am planning to get a 1080 ftw edition from evga. What kind of performance will I get from it compared to a 1070 or 1060? Witcher 3, Siege, Dishonored 2, and Mankind Divided are the most demanding games I will probably play. Will I bottleneck?

just look at benchmarks,1060/1070/1080 comparisons are all over.
you'll be bottlenecked in some games but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

no significant bottleneck and with a 1080, you will get better high/ultra fps than both the 1060/1070 in 1080p, 1440p and 4k (the 1080 and 1080ti will fare much better in 4k than the other 2)

Try using the PSU Tier List!

What monitor exactly are you using?

Bottleneck question can not be answered like this.

What bottlenecks, and how much, depends 100% on your software, and settings.

You can have a hard CPU Bottleneck in 4k Ultra, or you can have a GPU Bottleneck in 720p Medium. Depends on the games.

There WILL Be games and certain Settings, where your CPU will bottleneck a GTX 1080. However: It will STILL be faster than a GTX 1070 or 1060.

Just ask yourself: Does your CPU deliver enough fps for you? If it does, then you don't have to worry about any bottleneck. Because you have enough fps.

GTX 1060 --> +35-40% performance --> GTX 1070 --> +25%~ performance --> GTX 1080

Somewhat around this.

GHTX 1060 --> +65-85% performance --> GTX 1080.

I upgraded from GTX 1060 MSI Gaming X to a GTX 1080 MSI Gaming X a few Months ago, because i went from 1080p / 60 Hz up to 1440p / 144 Hz / G-Sync, so i wanted more power.

i'm using an i7 6700k @ 4.4 Ghz.

For example in Witcher 3 in ULTRA settings (no hairworks) and 1440p Resolution, my GTX 1060 managed around 42 fps, where my GTX 1080 got 73 fps, at the exact same Savegame.

Similar performance boosts in other games so far.

Firestrike Benchmark got my GTX 1060 around 11k-12k points, while my GTX 1080 gets around 22k - 24k. depending on clock.

It's a 1080p monitor. Maybe, if I get the money, I will get a 1440p monitor but 1080p does just fine. I do have a 4k tv that maybe I will play some light casual games on.

ok so i had a i5 6600k stock and a gtx 1080 and my benchmark score in unigne valley was like 5000
but when i switched to the 1070 my score was like 6500. so thats my story of a i5 6600k with a 1080, strange stuff

60 Hz? Or 144 Hz?

On 144 Hz, your CPU will most likely be a bottleneck (aka, NOT able, to hold 144 fps in most modern AAA games. Even if you go Low / 720p, your CPU shouldn't be able to hit 144 fps in every game).

But as long you can live with what your CPU deliver, everything is fine.

With 60 Hz you're absolutely perfectly fine.

For 1080p / 60 Hz, with a Target of 60 fps lock (with V-Sync or limiter, to have smooth even 16,67 ms Frametimes) a GTX 1060 is just fine. Can use ultra most of the times, in some games down on" high", which is perfectly fine.

1070 might give you the little bit extra, you need, to set more games on Ultra.

1080 will be overkill in many games, however, you CAN use DSR. You could technically use DSR x4.00, and use UHD resolution (3840x2160), and let it scale down on your 1080p Monitor. It won't look as sharp as a native UHD Monitor, but it will look MUCH sharper/cleaner than when you use 1080p. (even when your Monitor only has 1080p Pixels).

Witcher 3 on Ultra and UHD resolution will run at around 40 fps~

So reduce settings to like High, and you might hit 60 fps lock quite easy, and have awesome visuals.

And with a GTX 1080, you will be ready for a 1440p Monitor in the future, even if it's a 1440p Monitor with 144 Hz and g-Sync (Dell S2417dg for example)

But calculate the prices please.

If your choise is a GTX 1070 for 470€ vs. GTX 1080 for 499€, then of course get the GTX 1080. In THIS example, it will have +25% performance, for 6% higher Price.

the 1080p monitor is 144hz and the 4k is 60hz so I should get a 1070 if I'm understanding you correctly?

Oh, then nope. GTX 1080 definitely.

If you want to push up to 144 fps, you will absolutely be able to use the additional performance of a GTX 1080, over a GTX 1070 - as long your CPU can keep up.

if you go 4k, then 1080 for sure, or higher.

GTX 1070 is not a 4k Card. It will work, but with VERY greatly reduced settings.

Even GTX 1080 will need reduced settings for 60 fps.

G-Sync would help a TON to make your games smooth.

For 4k, you can not have enough GPU power. seriously ^^ some shit is so demanding, your eyes will fall out when you see it. xD

i donno, Ultra settings in FO4 give me about 50fps at 4k... heavy dips though and few and far between (depends on elements in play). not unplayable, but certainly doable. I would still recommend a 1080 for 4k play though just to keep minimum framerates higher.

FWIW Doom 2016 on nightmare settings is a breeze. i've never had problems with it. RotTR, that gets a little sluggish...

I barely use my 4k tv. If I ever use it its for small games. should I still get a 1080?

yes, i would (because in most countries, it's not much more expensive than a GTX 1070).

You may only have 1080p, but 144 Hz. Which makes a 1080 NOT overkill at all.

In 1080p, Witcher 3 in Ultra gets around 100-130 fps with my GTX 1080, depending on where i run around.

Also I mentioned that I oc'd my cpu to 4.6 ghz. Does that remove any bottleneck at all? I dont fully understand how that works

Of course, every Mhz there helps, for CPU demanding Games ;-)

Don't worry too much about that.

You will always have a Bottleneck in every single Gaming PC, otherwise you would have a million fps and more.

As long you get enough fps for you, you shouldn't worry.
