Hopefully it works!

Just got the display today and it ended up working perfectly! It looks amazing and there wasn't a single dead pixel. It is the perfect width/length/height, however, the top mounts for the displays screws will have to be modified with a drill bit, the bottom ones were perfectly fine.

This TN panel is actually quite amazing because it would fool me for being an ISP panel, you can look at any angle and I don't even notice a color difference. However, it does look like I will have to do a little color correction to the TN panel I received because it doesn't look quite perfect but it is definitely perfect for gaming. I didn't notice at first it was 120hz when I purchased it but wow I can notice/feel the difference between a 60hz monitor and a 120hz.

Hopefully, this helps out anyone who needs a 1080p display swap for their 4k display [40pin].

Link to display; http://www.panelook.cn/N173HHE-G32_Innolux_17.3_LCM_overview_cn_28924.html

Currently available for purchase at; http://www.ebay.com/itm/N173HHE-G32-B1-LED-LCD-Screen-Panel-Display-for-17-3-MATTE-1920-1080-40-PIN-TB-/182618093158?hash=item2a84e2f666:g:fgUAAOSwdGFYrh~M

Does anyone know (can provide a link) if a 1080p 17.3" 40 pin connector laptop screen exists? Let alone one that could fit inside an Alienware 17 r3? (Basically has similar brackets that will fit the screw holes with minor modifications). I have a 4k display and it has been treating me pretty badly and I want a 1080p display.

@iamdarkyoshi knows about laptop screens

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Use http://www.panelook.com's search. It'll list the models of pretty much every screen known to man with the specs you ask for.

You sure the 4K display is 40 pin though?

Yes, it is a 4k 40 pin. I disassembled it and purchased an OEM 1080p 30 pin one to realize it was a 40 pin in my laptop thats how I found out. I tried to find a adapter type cable to turn the 40 pin to a 30 pin but I couldnt find one.

You can see the two screen I have here; https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Dell/ALIENWARE~17~R3/

4k 40 pin is the one installed in the PC the 1080p 30 pin is the one I purchased and wont work because it is a 30 pin not a 40 pin.

Here are all the LCDs that should THEORETICALLY work.

http://www.panelook.com/sizmodlist.php?st=&pl=&sizes[]=1730&display_mode_lc_family=1&resolution_pixels=8180&signal_type_category=90&display_mode_lc_family=

These ones are also IPS panels:

I'd check images of the panel before you buy to double check.

How come the provided screenshot of those 4 displays are 50 pins instead of 40 pins?

Thats a very interesting detail, I did not notice that before. Searching ebay, it does seem to have a 50 pin connector in other descriptions, which I've never heard of before.

Sounds like IPS is out :/

Were all the TN panels 50 pin?

The panels in the image are 50 pin.

However, Link you sent me; http://www.panelook.com/sizmodlist.php?st=&pl=&sizes[]=1730&display_mode_lc_family=1&resolution_pixels=8180&signal_type_category=90&display_mode_lc_family=

are both 30 and 40 pins you have to sift through them. I found a few but I am unsure on how to tell if its slim enough to fit in my Alienware 17 r3, as well as if the connector is located close enough to the cable in the laptop, as well as if any of the mounting points are similar or how to mount it if they are not.

EDIT: If you cant tell by now I am completely clueless when it comes to laptops so please forgive me for being a newb.

I'm a bit perplexed as well. Whats the original 4k panel's model number out of curiosity?

My laptop has a 1080P IPS panel in it, but its probably some nonstandard panel because it supports GSync

I am pretty sure my model number is; B173ZAN01.0

EDIT: Yes it is my model number, had to double check sorry.

EDIT2: Not sure why the page is in Chinese so I just translated it with google, do you think this panel would work?; http://www.panelook.cn/N173HHE-G32_Innolux_17.3_LCM_overview_cn_28924.html

Ebay link here; http://www.ebay.com/itm/N173HHE-G32-B1-LED-LCD-Screen-Panel-Display-for-17-3-MATTE-1920-1080-40-PIN-TB-/182618093158?hash=item2a84e2f666:g:fgUAAOSwdGFYrh~M

EDIT3: I also have no idea if its a "quality" display, I want a display that would actually look decent and be color accurate. Such as what the default 30 pin option from Alienware would look like. (Basically not a cheap half @$$ product)

I've seen two kinds of TNs, the crap kind and the alright kind, and unfortunately, I've never been able to figure out how to tell the two apart without running them. However, the worst offenders were always the 40 pin 1366x768 displays, and the 1080p ones were usually fine.

But the panel you found seems like it should work...

Thanks for the great suggestions it really means a lot. I will take your word for it and purchase the one I sent via ebay link.

I will reply back once I have received the panel and have installed/tested it. As I know I am not the only one with this issue.
