HDD Bad Sectors

I have a 2Tb WD HDD that is showing it has 1239 bad sectors. Is this an unsafe amount?

If they're logically damaged, you can do a clean format of the drive. If they're physically damaged, you need to buy a new HDD. 

 

I would advise you to run chkdsk and to attempt repair of the sectors.

Most HDD's come from the manufacturer with a few bad sectors that are remade upon formatting.

Normally if some sectors are failing the drive is failing.

if OP reads it out as X number of sectors, that are sectors that died while it was in his posession, aka it is actively dying.

the speed of that may depend, but i REALLY like to advise caution after this drive was still "fine" the day before, and then i spent 2 full days recovering data one file at a time:

In regards to your previous post, are you speaking of the "10 sectors would be bad" or the "1200"?

10 sectors is a warning for what's to come, 1200 sectors is high alert.

A manufacturer would mist likely build an offset into the SMART values so when a use gets the drive it doesn't already show dead sectors, it would not be good for consumer confidence in the manufacturer. As you said a full wipe could just cause the drive to mark the sectors as dead and use others however if the number continues to rise , then thru disk is certainly failing.

OP, that drive is toast more than likely. If you just want to dick about with it you could use this program and see how long it'll go for.

I responded to a post that made a very gross presumption of the drive's health and not about OP's drive.

I personally would not trust a drive with my data without backup with that number of sector failures , if they just turned up.

We do not know what the history of the drive and it's bad sector count development and can only give a worst case scenario. OP should do what you say , if it fixes it probably wasn't an issue.
