Hey,

Just wondering what the little slot is on my Canon strap. Just the standard one that came with my 1100D.

At first, I thought it might be an SD card holder (which would be really cool!) but it isn't :/

Any ideas? I can maybe take a photo later if that helps but I can't right now.

Thanks for any help,

Doodle :P

If it's a black rubber thing, if you remove the frame around the viewfinder you can slot it there to block light going in, as it can cause unwanted reflections depending on the use case. Not a problem if you've got your eye up to it, but if you have it on a tripod with remote it may be different.

No, it's the thing on the strap in the background.

Thanks for trying :)

You're talking about that black piece of plastic attached to the strap in the top right area?  That's to cover the viewfinder for example when you are tripod mounting the camera and shooting a long exposure shot.  To prevent light leaking through the viewfinder and hitting the sensor.  To attach it, you need to remove the viewfinder's eyepiece cover first.

It should be mentioned in the camera's manual.

Yeah.... Manuals.... haha

Thanks though :D

By the way, you don't really have to worry about using it to cover the viewfinder unless you have very bright direct lighting shining into the viewfinder, such as if there is the sunlight or you are shining a very bright flashlight into the viewfinder while the reflex mirror inside the camera is up and the shutter is open during a long exposure shot.  I've pretty much have never encountered a light leak issue during all the times I've shot long exposures or done timelapses.  But better safe than sorry, so feel free to make it a habit to use that cover.
