I know 3 phase is more efficent than single phase but how odd is it for a single phase 1hp motor to be drawing 1200w or close to 5 amps when it's running with no load, just a pully. I assume this is bad.

Without being able to work with the motor hands on, it is hard to tell. 5 amps is not a terribly high amount. I would be more concerned about the load current. For most motors, freewheeling current is close to load current.

 

See if you can find a datasheet for your motorz it should tell you what kind of power it should be drawing.
