This post has been taken from MY Reddit and posted here because I need help. Some people did help but they're telling me to go to AMD and use their Ryzen 1700. I'm very skeptical because I know nothing about Ryzen and using logs from websites it seems like my i7-6700K is better regardless. Anyway, please read the post and lmk if you agree with me swapping or just upgrading to another CPU (I'll swap mobos for a WAY better CPU) or if my CPU is already good enough and it's a different problem. Anyway, please help!

Alright, so I've had this problem before but I'm not sure if I really fixed it or if I just eventually got used to it. But I have a pretty sick rig if you ask me. It has  SLI GTX 1080 MSI X 8GB GPUs, 4x 8gb ram(32 total), 2 250gb EVO Samsung SDDS, Some random HDD carried over from an old build (have no clue what it is), MSI z170A MOBO, skylake core i7 6700K CPU (overclocked @ 4.4gz).... so with my specs out of the way here's the big question. I play on 4K 60hz which it can clearly handle. But with certain games like Pubg (I know it's not fully optimized yet) I break 60 FPS on max settings but sometimes I get huge frame drops and it floats between 39-49 sometimes I'll get lucky and I'll get 90-75 but here's a bigger issue. I've tried to get into streaming recently and I can't seem to pull a good enough frame rate while streaming and keeping all my regular settings. I stream at 1080p 60 and it just doesn't seem right on either side. I drop to 35-40 frames and it's just a pain in the ass. Idk if it's the software or not. I've tried overclocking my GPU but I just can't seem to get a good enough setting where it doesn't crash but also deals out a huge amount of power. Maybe it's because I'm playing in 4K and I've thought about swapping my monitor for a 1440p one but it just looks too good on a good game. FINALLY when I give up streaming it seems like my CPU or something has been overworked too hard to the point where I won't get my regular frames back and I have to restart to get my frames back and I'll be good until I try streaming again.

So you are currently getting frame drops in games regardless of whether you stream or not? Did you check your CPUs temperatures and clocks while gaming?

Yes, my CPU runs on about 80-90C and my GPUS hit 75-80 C (mostly 80) btw I'm using the intel stock cooler. Maybe my CPU is getting too hot? I'm not sure

Give it a long gaming session with a CPU intensive game see if the clock drop and/or the CPU hits 95C.

Your CPU for gaming is among the best choices indeed: 4 cores 8 threads and the highest IPC available.

The problem is that game streaming requires a lot more resources than what your 4 cores 8 threads can give you. Not sure why you're skeptical of AMD but bottom line is that you either need to use the GPUs for encoding (Nvidia Shadowplay) or more likely you need more cores. You could look at X299 or just wait about a month or so for the 8700k that will probably be a 6/12 chip.

But an 8/16 chip might still be even better at game streaming. If you don't want to spend a lot of money and can sacrifice worst case 5 to 10% FPS then you outta come to terms with AMD and get a Ryzen chip, specifically the 1700.

Will do, but I can most definitely tell you it has hit 100C but I think that was when I was at 4.5 Ghz. I'm at work right now though so obviously I can't game now but once I do get home I will update you with accurate temps

If you want to stream and game at the same time, I am not surprised everyone was telling you to go with Ryzen 7 1700. 8 cores / 16 threads can handle the workload of the two tasks without issues.

The 6700k is a great CPU for gaming, and streaming at the same time uses more resources which explains the limitations of your CPU when it comes to combining these two workloads together. If you want to game and stream at the same time, then the ryzen 7 1700 should do the job perfectly fine, its an 8 core 16 threaded CPU which should provide more CPU horsepower when it comes to the optimization of streaming and gaming at the same time. The 8 core 16 thread chip will do better when it comes to handling heavier workloads such as gaming and streaming. The ryzen 7 1700 is cheaper than its counterparts and if you want to sacrifice 5-10% fps, than I think its worth the money.

replace that asap...especially that you have overclocked it....not trying to be an a$$hole but how on earth you left a stock cooler over that 6700k and on top of that overclocked...with that stock cooler your "pretty sick rig" is not "sick" anymore.

Since it's newer I might just wait. Any price estimate of release? But will the 6700K be better than the 1700? At the point I want something that is going to be better all round with performance(gameplay even without streaming) and streaming. I'm very skeptical of AMD mainly because like I said I know nothing about it. Intel and AMD are 2 different manufacturers and there's so much to compare that I don't know much about.

I spent a lot of money on it and at the time I thought the stock cooler did a pretty good job. You learn as you go. I'm replacing it soon.

See, that's the thing. If I'm gonna upgrade I'm gonna want to increase in both. Not really looking for a trade off :/

Sounds good, but people are saying I'll drop in FPS with ryzen 1700, I'm looking for both increases if I'm gonna upgrade and possibly put 500$ out

I totally can see you spent a lot of money but not having $30 for at least an 212 EVO is like having that 2nd GTX 1080 doing nothing (which it doesn't do too much unless SLI accepted by games, but that's a different story).

I know that you learn, but considering you build a high end quite expensive system I assumed that you know how K series + overclocking + basic cooling work.

Overclocking the ryzen chip will give you a performance increase prior to investing into an aftermarket cooling solution to keep the temperatures down. As another option, you could look into the X299 platform where skylake X comes into place. Or, you could wait a couple of months for the 8700k which comes in 6 core variants.

Then get an X299 motherboard an the 7820x MSRP is about 600 bucks for the chip and 300 or so for the motherboard.

If you rethink about that 5-10% lower gaming compromise however, the X370 boards are usually 150 bucks and the 1700 it's about 330 but for no trade off at all you need to spend an extra 420 bucks not even considering proper cooling.

Yeah I'm looking into the x299 right now. So much stuff when it comes down to CPUs :(

I don't get people...maybe it's just me...I got brain problems.

You wanna buy best now? Just like you did with the 6700k a year ago or whenever you bought it?

But don't mind me...just a nerd with problems. Cheers.

Sure thing,

This is the 7820x: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117794&cm_re=7820x-_-19-117-794-_-Product

These are some motherboards: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007627 601298415

Also for this chip you really wanna get at least a 240mm AIO cooler: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100008008 601299796

Note that if you want the best you can still get even better processors like the 7900x (that's about 1000 bucks though) that do offer you even more cores and threads (10/20 in this case) and while you probably don't need as much for game streaming it would cover you also when editing video and such which is something I imagine someone streaming might want to do since people often end up editing their VoDs and such.
