Unless you are going to hook up alot of expensive audio equipement the one on your MB should do fine.

Otherwise the Xonar range from Asus is decent

a lot of people say the wrong stuff for a sound card. It is better to get a soundcard than not if your motherboard doesnt have a great one for example realtek. Realtek works fine for most cases but they also dont support advanced stuff. However from my experience regardless of how good the hardware of a creative soundcard is, the software is crap regardless of the line.

 

There are various reasons to get a soundcard, one of them is for dedicated processing and this isnt only to do with games. Being able to do hardware mixing with ASIO can reduce CPU usage and reduce latency (in some cases). Playing games on 24 bit audio 192khz surround sound can be CPU demanding too.

 

Input outputs are also another reason.

 

I have owned 2 soundcards both having creative chips inside and there are benefits over realtek even on the hardware side not only by better amps and being able to choose your amps but you get more software options for what you can do too. Its not only the audio quality (not to mention reduced feedback on the microphone for streamers). I've seen a lot of streamers complain about mic noise when using realtek audio which can be heard when amplified which is the feedback of the amplifier. A lot of cheap usb DACs are so simple that they dont have any advanced circuits to have this sort of issue.

 

if people on forums had their say soundcards would stop selling and many things would crumble. There are so many benefits a soundcard brings today from IO, dedicated processing, better components for better audio, and software options so everything from home use to professional there are uses for soundcards.

 

Realtek works fine to some extent and realtek drivers are better than creative's but in high end audio realtek just cant cope.
