So like I previously said my friend is going to be building a PC for $600, and we've decided on everything besides the motherboard and case. Here's the current build. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/46XGCy

He wants it to have a side panel window, and the color scheme to be black + red or blue. We haven't chosen the ram either because if its color, so if you could help with that too it would be amazing :)  Also he's not going to get an SSD currently because he's not really bothered by boot times, and the extra 50 for the GPU would really help.

Just now, emosun said:

You should be using an ssd regardless of boot times as it makes retrieving ANYTHING the machine needs from the drive faster.

I would sooner choose a slightly less gpu and an ssd over the several times over slower hard drive.

He's lived with HDD his entire life, also the SSD is only 120gb so it would only store the OS.

If he gets a weaker gpu for lets say $120, he's stuck with it unless he sells it for less, if he gets a gpu for lets sya $170 now, he can always get the SSD later without losing money.

the ryzen 5 1400 is also quite slow for the price compared to something like an old e5-2670 which is about 33% faster and averages around 100$

You might have much better luck building a machine from an older workstation as it'll be much faster and cheaper and give you more room for an ssd and a gpu.

I also want to stay away from as many used parts as possible, since when I start using things like older motherboards and CPU's,  they have old connectors, dont support certain things, and makes more possibility for something to break

Not to mention I have to buy thermal paste, a cooler, and more motherboard parts.

not sure i'd use that website as any sort of real benchmark in comparing cpu's. The site appears to have very loose standards much like "can you run it" website which doesn't display information very accurately either.

use somthing more established like cinebench or passmark.

Still, I think I'm still better of going with a new mobo/cpu since its less problems and less things to buy.

new parts doesn't mean less problems by far.

I'd sooner purchase known working higher quality/faster parts than slower/cheaper untested new parts.

This topic occurs all the time on linus videos. and they always recommend buying faster higher quality used parts over low quality/cheap new parts when you're on a tight budget. those workstation class machines are built to last much longer than cheap consumer grade parts , but it's your money so I'll leave it at that. lol
